The latest track from Norma Jean Martine is an addictive, self-validating anthem. ‘Basketball’ is a perfectly crafted piece of pop that kicks off with funky beats and soulful vocals, before twisting towards a dramatic, building pre-chorus and an explosive hook. She explains that “Writing this song was sort of therapy for me to work out if the first boyfriend was a rebound boy, or if the new one was. I was trying to work out why I needed to be with someone constantly, and why I was so afraid to be alone.” Fuzzy synths sounds and meticulously crafted drums give the track the polished professionalism of modern pop, but its honesty and depth takes it so much further. -Dan Peeke
